Nothing in these worksheets is a figure we found somewhere. Every number comes from the figures you enter and the arithmetic stated on the page: contracts over their average term is renewals a month, times the window and the annual value is the money renewing; term less months elapsed less the notice period is the days to the deadline. Days are counted at 30 a month. The defaults are a worked example of a common small register, not a recommendation and not a benchmark.

The best legal management software for a small legal team is not the one with the most modules; it is the one that keeps the register true. A small in-house team is asked the same questions every week: what did we sign with this vendor, when does it renew, what is the notice period, who owns it, and what is open on that matter. Legal management software has to answer those from a record rather than a memory, and the record has four parts that a shared drive never holds together: the contracts with their dates and values, the obligations they carry with an owner and a due date, the matters with a status, and the clauses the team has already agreed. This page is about that list, about what the category bundles that a small team will not use, and about how this product is priced. Every figure on this page is the worked example's own arithmetic, from the figures you enter.

Put the contracts on a register with dates that count

Each contract carries its counterparty, term, notice period, annual value and owner. 120 contracts on a two year average term are 5 renewals a month, and at $18,000 a year each that is $90,000 of annual value coming up for a decision every month.

Turn the notice periods into deadlines

A 60 day notice period on a renewal due at the end of a three month window gives 30 days from today to act. Fifteen renewals in the window, nine of them evergreen, means $162,000 of contracts renew themselves unless someone gives notice in time.

Keep the obligations and the matters beside the contracts

Every contract carries deliverables, reports and notices with dates; every matter has a status. Kept beside the contract they came from, they are answered from one screen; kept in a second spreadsheet they drift, and the register is only as true as its slowest tab.

Best legal management software: common questions

What does legal management software have to do at minimum?

Hold each contract's term, notice period, value and owner; count down to each notice deadline and remind the owner; keep obligations with due dates and matters with a status; keep the clauses the team has agreed; and export the lot. Everything else is a feature list.

Is this a contract lifecycle management platform?

No. CLM platforms author, negotiate, sign and route contracts for the whole company. Clauselane is the register the legal team keeps once the contract is signed, priced for a team of one to five rather than a procurement function.

How is this priced?

Clauselane Pro is $49 a month for the whole legal team, flat, however many contracts you register. Both worksheets on this site are free with no account whether or not you subscribe.

Clauselane Pro

Keeping the register

The worksheet gives you one window's deadlines and one contract's dates. Pro remembers them: the contracts, their obligations, the matters, the clauses, and the reminder that arrives before the notice deadline rather than after the renewal.

  • Download the contract summary as a file you can send to the business
  • Hand it over without the Clauselane watermark across it
  • Come back to this contract's summary with the figures still in it
  • Put your own logo on the summaries and reports the business sees
  • Take every contract, obligation, matter and clause out at once, as a file
  • Send a contract owner their notice deadline without leaving the register
  • Not used by Clauselane: nothing here takes a payment from your counterparties
  • Push the register's contract values across to the books as commitments
