Nothing in these worksheets is a figure we found somewhere. Every number comes from the figures you enter and the arithmetic stated on the page: contracts over their average term is renewals a month, times the window and the annual value is the money renewing; term less months elapsed less the notice period is the days to the deadline. Days are counted at 30 a month. The defaults are a worked example of a common small register, not a recommendation and not a benchmark.

Contract management software for legal departments is a narrower thing than contract management software for companies, and the difference is the buyer. Procurement buys a lifecycle platform to author, route, sign and store contracts across the business. The legal department buys a register: what has been signed, what it commits the company to, when it renews, what the notice period is, who owns it and which obligations are overdue. A small department of one to five people does not need the workflow engine; it needs the dates to count and the reminders to arrive. This page is about what the legal department's contract software has to hold, where the lifecycle platform and the register part company, and how this one is priced. Every figure on this page is the worked example's own arithmetic, from the figures you enter.

Register what has been signed, with the dates that matter

Term, notice period, renewal term, annual value and owner, per contract. 120 contracts over a two year average term are 5 renewals a month; enter your own count and term and the arithmetic follows. A register without notice periods is a filing cabinet with a search box.

Count down to the notice deadline, not the renewal

The renewal date is when the money moves; the notice deadline is when the company can still decide. On the worked example a renewal due at the end of a three month window with a 60 day notice period leaves 30 days to act, and nine of the fifteen renewals in that window are evergreen.

Track the obligations each contract carries

Deliverables, reports, insurance certificates, audits: each is a date someone has to meet, and the register keeps them against the contract with an owner. On the lifecycle sheet's example, 2 of 8 obligations overdue is 25%, a figure the general counsel can put in front of the business.

Contract management software for legal departments: common questions

Do we need contract lifecycle management as well?

If the company needs authoring, negotiation, e-signature and approval routing across procurement and sales, that is a lifecycle platform and a different budget. If signing is handled and the problem is knowing what was signed and when it renews, that is the register, and it is what Clauselane does.

Can each business unit see only its own contracts?

Clauselane Pro is multi user on the flat price, so each unit's lawyer or manager keeps their contracts on the shared register and the legal team sees the whole of it.

How is it priced?

$49 a month for the whole legal team, flat, however many contracts you register. Both worksheets on this site are free without it.

Clauselane Pro

Keeping the register

The worksheet gives you one window's deadlines and one contract's dates. Pro remembers them: the contracts, their obligations, the matters, the clauses, and the reminder that arrives before the notice deadline rather than after the renewal.

  • Download the contract summary as a file you can send to the business
  • Hand it over without the Clauselane watermark across it
  • Come back to this contract's summary with the figures still in it
  • Put your own logo on the summaries and reports the business sees
  • Take every contract, obligation, matter and clause out at once, as a file
  • Send a contract owner their notice deadline without leaving the register
  • Not used by Clauselane: nothing here takes a payment from your counterparties
  • Push the register's contract values across to the books as commitments
